A founding member of the Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK), Abdullah Öcalan was born in a Kurdish Turkish village in 1948. Öcalan is often referred to as Apo (Kurdish for Uncle) in popular Kurdish culture.

From 1999 to 2009, Abdullah Öcalan was the sole inmate on the Imrali Island High Security Closed Prison, guarded by approximately 1000 Turkish soldiers. There are now three other inmates in the island prison.
