Sep 21, 2020 · I regularly have Microsoft ® Windows Based Script Host (located at C:\Windows\SysWOW64\wscript.exe) popping in my Task Manager and using a lot of CPU. From my understanding this software is used by third-party scripts. Is there any way to have more detail about what script is using it? I'm using Windows 10 by the way.

Aug 22, 2020 · Verified wscript's existence by having him run wscript from the run dialog, and the "Windows Script Host Settings" dialog popped up. Right clicking the script file and checking Open With shows the default file association is with "Microsoft windows based script host" as it should be (and clicking that produces no script execution.)

This works for all users, but not for the SYSTEM user in Windows 11. To test, I started aconsole using psexec -i -s cmd.exe to run cmd.exe in SYSTEM user context.

Oct 31, 2021 · The issue: I've noted that, when I run the script, it doesn't actually show in the TaskManager (EDIT: in the "Processes" tab) unless it has previously displayed a msgbox (after which point it shows up as "Microsoft ® Windows Based Script Host" as I'd expect).
