Patea (/ pɑːˈtɛər / pah-TAIR) is the third-largest town in South Taranaki District, New Zealand. It is on the western bank of the Pātea River, 61 kilometres north-west of Whanganui on State Highway 3. Hāwera is 27 km to the north-west, and Waverley 17 km to the east.

If you're passing through Pātea, stop in and visit the iconic Aotea Waka Memorial on the main street, commemorating one of the first great canoes in which Māori migrated to New Zealand. The South Taranaki town of Pātea is the home of the award- winning Pātea Māori Club, whose 19 80s hit Poi-E is still one of the country’s favourite songs.

A beautiful black sand beach that stretches for miles with high cliffs providing an excellent lookout spot. Mana Bay offers easy car parking for both the lookout and the beach access. There is also a playground next to the car park. Swimming – the beach is unpatrolled. Surf – best on the south side of the river mouth at high tide.

Learn about Pātea’s rich history and follow the lower end of the Pātea River through pastures and pine forest to several points of interest dating back to the 1860s. Start the walk at either end, and if you finish at the beach, enjoy a meal using one of the free electronic barbecues in the picnic area. Toilets are available at the beach.
