An 8-year-old boy was struck and killed by a tree branch that fell while he was attending a summer camp at King Gillette Ranch in Calabasas on Wednesday afternoon, July 9, authorities said. Authorities responded just after 2:50 p.m. to the ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains. Camp staffers were giving aid to several people.

Hunter Sowards reports from Calabasas, where one child was killed and several other people were injured on Wednesday when a large tree branch fell on a summer camp.

Some camps in the region had to be evacuated, and local newspapers described how Camp Mystic was among those cut off from the outside world. According to a Kerr County history book, floodwaters at Camp Mystic almost reached the top of the dining hall’s stairs.
