A rare, historic snowfall blanketed parts of the southern U.S. on Tuesday, allowing residents to play in the rather unusual weather. Families went snow tubing in Houston. People made snowballs and snow angels. People were even seen skiing on Bourbon Street.

After temporarily suspending flights, the Houston Airport System resumed operations Wednesday morning. Officials made the announcement Tuesday afternoon following significant snowfall overnight in Houston.

A powerful and rare winter storm that slammed the Houston area with snow on Tuesday forced the closure of both William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) and George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), but thanks to the hard work by crews the airports were able to resume normal operations on Wednesday.

Hundreds of flights have been canceled at Houston's two main airports, over 100 people were left stranded, due to the winter weather.
