The senators referenced the 2006 Warm Fire, another lightning-caused fire on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon that was initially allowed to burn as a wildland use fire. The Warm Fire ultimately destroyed 59,000 acres of land and nearly killed a thousand people.
PHOENIX — Residents on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon have been ordered to evacuate due to a fire in Grand Canyon National Park. The fire, named the Dragon Bravo Fire, is approximately 12,728 acres and has 8% containment. It was caused by lightning on July 4, officials with the National Park Service said.
The wildfire that destroyed a Grand Canyon lodge this month was the latest blow to the National Park Service staffing and funding cuts.
The fire on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon started from a lightning strike but was managed as a controlled burn until it spread.
A combination of high winds, dry air and above average temperatures caused a wildfire in the Grand Canyon to rapidly expand and cause major damage.
A new wildfire was reported today at 6:34 p.m. in Los Angeles County, California. Canyon Fire has been burning on federal land managed by the United States Forest Service. There is currently no information on the containment of the fire and its cause remains undetermined.

Now at 35,714 acres, the Gothic Fire is 25% contained on Department of Defense land — the Nevada Test and Training Range. It has been burning since July 6, but hasn’t grown significantly in recent days. It is the state’s largest wildfire so far this year, and now there’s a second fire nearby.
