In the fall of 1852, the Rock Island Line hired Farnam to build the railroad. On Feb. 22, 1854, the completion of the railroad to Rock Island was celebrated with a gala dinner in Rock Island.

A Rock Island Railroad train passes over the bridge in 1980. The bridge was closed to trains later that year, when the rail line went bankrupt, but was opened a few years later as a toll bridge.
