Rietvlei is the largest peri-urban game reserve within city borders. Rietvlei dam was built during the great depression (from about 1929 to early 1930s) and completed in 1934.

Rietvlei nature reserve was bought by the government on 2 September 1929 and proclaimed as a nature reserve. It also bears testimony of one of the most dreadful times in South Africa’s history.

The facility has a rich and interesting history – all which is revealed in a glossy coffee-table book named Rietvlei Nature Reserve – The History, the Wildlife and Other Digressions.

The land-based areas of Rietvlei in the Table Bay Nature Reserve are open again to the public for recreational activities such as birdwatching and walking. Cape Argus.
