Tallest Species . Coast redwoods are the tallest of the three redwood species and can grow to well over 300 feet tall. Yet their root systems only extent to about 6 to 12 feet below the ground.

Redwood trees have shallow root systems that extend over 100 feet from the base. They thrive in moist, coastal climates where their roots intertwine with the roots of other redwoods.
