New York officials say as many as 300,000 people could lose their food aid under program changes in the massive bill Republicans are racing to pass.
What Are SNAP Benefits, and How Will They Change? President Trump’s policy bill makes significant cuts to the food aid program, once known as food stamps, used by about 42 million people.
"When people are in a choice between paying for food or paying rent, people are going to naturally choose food," NYC Department of Social Services Commissioner Molly Wasow Park tells City Limits.
The president’s sweeping new law includes work requirements for more people and less coverage for some noncitizens. Republicans argue the cuts are needed to tackle waste and fraud.
State officials estimate that more than 300,000 households will lose parts or all of their SNAP benefits.
The state’s monthly SNAP benefits, colloquially called "food stamps," cover an average of about 323,462 households per month and covered about $1.5 billion in benefits for fiscal year 2024.
