Facing soaring AI power demand, ComEd wants to dramatically raise deposits on data center projects to discourage speculators and protect grid resources.

The Chicagoland area has seen 13 data center projects generate $4.2B in investment since 2020, Collins' release said. But much of that development has been in the suburbs.

Even with the boom in data centers in Illinois, ComEd said it still has plenty of power. There are more than 80 data centers now and more than 30 planned, plus the large quantum project.
