Freeway north of Payson closed The southbound lanes of State Route 87 were closed just north of Payson due to a crash on the afternoon of July 6, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

The Cub Fire started around 6 p.m. on Sunday. Since then, it has burned 386 acres on the east side of state Route 87, about 7 miles east of Fort McDowell, and is 39% contained.
