A new caterpillar has been discovered with the unique ability to make its cocoon out of flakes of dried resin - a sticky substance exuded from trees that hardens over time.

A cocoon is distinct from both a pupa and chrysalis. It is a hard, silk shell that a moth larva weaves around itself before it enters the pupa stage of metamorphosis.

As a chrysalis, some of the caterpillar's organs dissolve. Groups of special cells divide and multiply to form wings and other adult body parts.
