Back in 2011, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) included Camp Mystic, an all-girls Christian camp, in a “Special Flood Hazard Area” for its National Flood Insurance map for Kerr County, according to the Associated Press and The New York Times.

Some camps in the region had to be evacuated, and local newspapers described how Camp Mystic was among those cut off from the outside world. According to a Kerr County history book, floodwaters at Camp Mystic almost reached the top of the dining hall’s stairs.

In the week since the flood, generations of Mystic Girls are turning to each other. They are seeking the familiar that takes them back to camp.
