On Sunday evening at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards, Beyoncé finally received one of the accolades her fans have long been waiting for: the superstar’s eighth studio album, Cowboy Carter, took home the award for Album of the Year. She is the first Black woman to win the award since Lauryn Hill.

Beyoncé’s bittersweet history of being celebrated repeatedly while continually missing out on one of the most significant awards shows even the most brilliant work can sometimes be misunderstood.

The superstar is the first Black woman to take the prize this century, and the fourth in Grammy history. It was her fifth nomination for the show’s top award.
