From standard deductions to adoption credits, the IRS has announced major updates that could impact your tax return this year.

The IRS started accepting 2024 tax returns on Jan. 27, and on Friday the agency posted the statistics so far from tax season 2025. This year's numbers show that the agency has already processed more than 23 million returns and issued more than 8 million tax refunds.

The layoffs at the Internal Revenue Service came alongside additional firings at the Transportation Security Administration and the C.I.A.

As the Trump Administration laid off thousands of IRS employees right in the middle of tax season, it may take longer for you to get a return.

In addition to the planned layoffs, the Trump administration intends to lend IRS workers to the Department of Homeland Security to assist with immigration enforcement. In a letter sent earlier this month, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem asked Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to borrow IRS workers to help with ongoing immigration crackdown efforts.

As tax season arrived, thousands of Internal Revenue Service employees were on the chopping block. Experts warned that there could be long wait times to get in contact with the IRS and potentially to get returns back.
