It’s the erasure — that rewriting of history — that dream hampton and the other executive producers of “Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop” sought to correct.

As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, we’re taking a moment to honor some of our favorite women rappers, from Lil’ Kim and Missy Elliott to Megan Thee Stallion and Cupcakke.

Women have left an indelible imprint on hip-hop. They have been pioneers. They have been provocateurs. They have been unifiers. But in 2023, as the music birthed from the Bronx celebrates 50 years ...

Because, at its peak, hip-hop culture was synonymous with mainstream culture, the impact of this was felt not just in music but also in fashion, sports, film and all entertainment forms.

Oftentimes, hip-hop, just like the nation, overlooks the South. One only needs to listen to Tokyo Jetz and Hood Brat, two Florida rappers featured in the series, to pick up the difference.

“She must’ve just known hip-hop was embedded in me at such a young age,” the MTV “Love and Hip-Hop: Atlanta” reality star said. The then 5-year-old would dance until she couldn’t anymore.

LONG ISLAND CITY, Queens (PIX11) — It was in August of 1973, at a dance bash in the Bronx, that hip-hop was born. And now, there will be many celebrations in all five boroughs throughout August.
