South Africa faces chicken meat shortages in the coming months as a bird flu outbreak and electricity cuts ravage the poultry industry, the country's largest producer Astral Foods said on Thursday.

Currently, South Africa imports about 20% of its poultry products from countries such as the US, Argentina, and the EU, with approximately 70% of these imports from Brazil.

Namibia has suspended imports of live poultry, birds and poultry products from South Africa following the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in the neighbouring country.

Unonhlozi means eyebrows, a nod to the bird’s wizard-worthy eyebrows, and it is one of many new isiZulu words that researchers have created for South Africa’s birds.
