Ohio Lt. Gov. Jon Husted is Republican Gov. Mike DeWine’s pick to succeed Vice President-elect JD Vance in the U.S. Senate.

In order to keep the Senate job, Husted will have to win a 2026 special election to fill the last two years of the term JD Vance vacated to become vice-president, then seek a full-six year term in 2028.

Ohio’s newest U.S. Senator was sworn in Tuesday afternoon. Jon Husted, who served six years as Ohio’s lieutenant governor, was chosen by Gov. Mike DeWine last week to replace JD Vance, who resigned the Senate seat to become vice president.

In making his announcement Friday, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said he wanted a "workhorse" in the U.S. Senate who would focus on Ohio as well as the rest of the country.
