WPTV traveled to the northern part of Florida to Jacksonville to give those considering travel a snapshot of what roads look like along the state's east coast

A major winter storm that slammed Texas and blanketed the northern Gulf Coast with record-breaking snow moved east Wednesday, spreading heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain across parts of the Florida Panhandle, Georgia and eastern Carolinas.

It has been 35 years for Jacksonville, and the weather service in Houston said it was the most significant winter storm in the area since at least 1960. The storm's impact will be felt for days in Southern cities not accustomed to the deep freeze that has gripped most of the nation this week.

Commercial and Roll Off Customers with regular service days scheduled between Wednesday, January 22 and Friday, January 24 will be delayed by one day. Wednesday customers will be serviced on Thursday, Thursday customers will be serviced on Friday, and Friday customers will be serviced on Saturday.

The dining scene in Downtown Jacksonville slumped in 2024, with more restaurants closing than opening. But with more than a dozen under construction, in development or announced, 2025 could bring a rebound. In January, Bagels R Us opened at 440 W. Adams St. across from the Duval County Courthouse. It’s open 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday-Friday.

North Florida and Queens (NC) will hit the court in a matchup of ASUN opponents. The teams match up Thursday for the first time this season.
