COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost announced he will seek the Republican nomination for governor in 2026. Yost, currently serving his second term as attorney general, previously served two terms as Ohio’s auditor. He said he has devoted his career to protecting individual liberties and fostering an environment for economic growth.

Yost, 68, seeks to succeed two-term Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, a fellow Republican, who is term-limited in 2026. He had teased his plans in a somewhat ominous black-and-white video posted to the social platform X in November.

Yost said that he gained a national reputation as an America First attorney general, supporting President Trump's agenda at the state level.

Yost is the second person and the first Republican to announce they are running for the Governor's seat in 2026.

The 68-year-old Yost is the third candidate to officially announce a bid to replace the term-limited Gov. Mike DeWine.

Yost’s bid comes after Vivek Ramaswamy signaled plans to run for governor next year but has not officially announced it.
