Brooklyn Park voters will vote to fill the vacant seat of Rep. Melissa Hortman, who was killed last month in a politically motivated assassination.

Candidates have until July 22 to file for office in the special election for House District 34B in the Brooklyn Park area.

Hortman represented House District 34B, a district that includes Brooklyn Park, as well as parts of Champlin and Coon Rapids.

Kristi Noem, former South Dakota governor, now-secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, whom Walz worked alongside while both served in the U.S. House of Representatives, was his first target. Walz joked it would be "really tough" to make the trip to South Dakota because he "had to decide what [he] was going to wear."
