A suspected drink-driver has been arrested after a car veered off a bridge and blocked a railway line, causing travel chaos for commuters in Greater Manchester. Police said a man in his 30s was driving the vehicle when it veered off a bridge and landed on its roof after a collision near Salford in the early hours of Friday.

The driver appears to have escaped relatively unhurt but serious travel problems are predicted for most of the day.

Routes and services around Manchester have been cancelled, diverted or delayed after a dramatic collision resulting in a car on the train tracks during the night.

The vehicle came to a rest upside down on a line in Salford, Greater Manchester, affecting services to Liverpool.

The main railway line between Liverpool and Manchester will remain closed for most of the day after a car plunged on to the tracks. Northern, TransPennine Express and Transport for Wales services face significant disruption until the car can be removed from the line which connects Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Piccadilly.
