The four excommunicated bishops, who include Society of St. Pius X superior general Bishop Bernard Fellay, were consecrated by Archbishop Lefebvre in 1988.

St. Pius X, who reigned as Pope from his election in 1903 until his death in 1914, is the first of these great Vicars of Christ, having been canonized in 1954 by Pope Pius XII.
