Washington — The House passed a controversial bill on Thursday that would require Americans to show proof of citizenship in person to register to vote in federal elections, which critics say could disenfranchise millions of eligible voters. Four Democrats joined all Republicans to pass the measure in a 220-208 vote.

Voting rights groups warn that the measure could make it challenging for women who changed their last names after getting married.

In the USA, the voter ID laws currently mandate an individual to confirm their identity using specific forms of ID when he/she votes. Every state has different rules.
