While South Mountain trails remained open year-round, hikers there appeared to heed heat warnings. About 790 people hiked the mountain on heat warning days in 2024, compared with about 1,600 in 2020.

Last year, there was a total of 45 days when that was the case. Now, the City of Phoenix has expanded that list to include the Hau'Pai Trail, the Holbert Trail, and the Mormon Trail at South Mountain.

Up next for the South Mountain trail closure changes it a vote with the Phoenix City Council. It’s unclear when they’ll discuss it. Again the proposal only affects South Mountain trail closures.
