The trend of year-round shorts has gained momentum among boys over the last several years, according to Dr. Elaine Schulte, a pediatrician at Children's Hospital at Montefiore in the Bronx, New York.

This year’s Oscar-nominated animated shorts tell compact tales about first kisses, sweets and an old-fashioned children’s TV show, along with more adult topics such as PTSD and hair transplants.

“That’s right, no matter what the weather, my boys are in shorts. Yup, it’s a balmy 26 degrees this morning, definitely shorts weather,” she wrote.

Statistics on the shorts-in-winter trend do not exist, but Marshal Cohen, a fashion-industry analyst with The NPD Group, said the style has become the way for boys to try and look cool in winter.
