If you’ve seen a man running in rooster costume lately, you’ve seen Mateo Hayes. He is an aspiring ultramarathoner, an Ypsilanti local, a recovering addict and lately, a chicken.

At the center of that tradition – a chicken costume. The fire district has been celebrating this tradition for 40 years by having someone dressed as a chicken hand out gifts to kids.
