A rare and beloved 7-year-old antelope named Lief died after choking on a cap from a squeezable pouch, a Tennessee zoo said, warning of the dangers to animals from plastic packaging.

John Ball Zoo staff stated they spent 300 hours introducing the two animals to each other before the hippo killed the antelope, according an internal review released Friday, Sept. 1.

Brights Zoo in Limestone, Tennessee, has announced that Lief, a 7-year-old male sitatunga antelope, died after choking on part of a baby food pouch that was left behind by a zoo visitor.

A sitatunga antelope can live up to around 22 years in human care, according to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo.Lief “still had a lot of life to live,” Brights Zoo said.

Lief, as the antelope was known, was comfortable with humans. A squeezable food pouch, which is among items banned at the zoo to protect the animals, was found in the exhibit.
