On average, nearly 120 people die in car crashes every day. But a recent crash in North Carolina left the motorsports community grieving. Retired NASCAR team owner and racing veteran Shigeaki Hattori appears to have crossed into oncoming traffic and was killed.

The owner of a NASCAR racing team died in a crash over the weekend in Huntersville, police said. Shigeaki Hattori, of Mooresville, was driving a 2025 Toyota Crown at about 9:15 a.m. Saturday when he was involved in the two-vehicle wreck on N.C. Highway 73 near McGuire Nuclear Station Road, Charlotte Observer news partner WSOC reported.

Former IndyCar driver and NASCAR team owner Shigeaki Hattori was killed in a car crash in Huntersville. Authorities confirmed his death following a two-vehicle collision.
