In 1994, astronomers using the Hubble Telescope provided an important close-up view of Pluto. Hubble captured what was, at the time, the most detailed image of the dwarf planet.

Over the past decade, researchers have been puzzling through Pluto’s mysteries. Meanwhile, the New Horizons probe heads for interstellar space.

Hubble captured the images using one of its wide-field cameras earlier this month. As you can see from the above image, we're unable to glean a lot about Pluto from Hubble's images.

The new images reveal substantial differences from how Pluto looked when Hubble examined it in 1994. Pluto has gotten redder, and the northern hemisphere has brightened as the south has darkened.
