Video from the scene shows the old Catholic School, known as the Madonna Classroom Building, engulfed in flames. Marrero Fire Chief Stephen Guidroz said the fire was reported around 11:52 a.m.

The building that burned Wednesday was known as the Old Hope Haven school and was built in 1932, according to Sarah McDonald, spokesperson for the Archdiocese. It served as classroom and gym space.

Nearly six years and two owners later, the campuses still sit idle and deteriorating, the absentee owner of both properties facing foreclosure on each and plans for apartment conversions sidelined.

Back in February, the public Facebook group St. Paul Catholic School Alumni & Friends shared a plea for help for renovations to the classrooms in hopes of attracting new students.

In 1965, the school constructed a two-story annex with 12 additional classrooms. Pre-kindergarten programs for children ages 2 to 4 were added in the 1990s.
