The idea of offering "early access" to games in development, for a price, started 10 years ago this week. This idea has spread to not just PC games, but PlayStation and Xbox console titles.
Early access, at least in the way we think of it now, started in 2009 with Minecraft. The first versions of the game were free, but creator Markus “Notch” Persson decided to create a paid version.
If an Early Access game hasn’t been updated in over a year, it’s likely done and should be ignored. Detailed update information on a game can be found on its Steam page under Show update history.
