Iceland fell short of a historic achievement after a recount prevented the country from electing Europe’s first female-majority parliament.

Iceland's female prime minister, Katrín Jakobsdóttir, was elected in 2017. Jakobsdóttir, 45, is a member of Left Green Party, which lost several seats in the election but kept eight.

Iceland looked to have elected a woman-majority parliament but a recount of votes on Sunday showed there will still be more men than women in the chamber, state broadcaster RUV reported.

The initial vote count had female candidates winning 33 seats in Iceland’s 63-seat parliament, the Althing, in an election that saw centrist parties make the biggest gains.
