This summer, Sandler returned to the golf course with "Happy Gilmore 2," out July 25 on Netflix. Directed by Kyle Newacheck and written by Tim Herlihy and Adam Sandler, the sequel features new roles for Bad Bunny, Margaret Qualley and Benny Safdie.

Happy Gilmore 2, out now on Netflix, follows Sandler’s titular retired golfer, Happy Gilmore, as he returns to the sport in order to pay for his daughter to attend a Parisian ballet school. It comes nearly 30 years after the original 1996 classic sports comedy.

One of the things that made the original Happy Gilmore funny (and most of the early Sandler films in total) was its use of small role silliness. The maid in Billy Madison, the “Mista Mista” lady from Happy Gilmore. The old man in the bar in The Wedding Singer. These things matter in the funny tapestry of a successful Sandler film.

Happy Gilmore 2 is the funniest movie of the year so far by default, if only because no other movies really try to go for laugh-a-minute comedy like this any longer. The new Naked Gun movie will surely challenge it, but why can't the audiences of today get their own Happy Gilmores and Frank Drebins to cherish anew?
