Tibetan Mastiffs are named thusly by Europeans who found them living among the people of the Himalayas, as most large European dogs also bore the name of Mastiff.

The Tibetan Mastiff, called Do Khyi in Tibet, is a herding dog originally from the Himalayas’ high plateaus. It is particularly prized in Tibet and is one of the oldest dog breeds in the East.
