A: Game designers are offering some promising new options for elementary and middle-school students. An app called Motion Math: Fractions, is available for Apple and Android devices.

That peer-reviewed study, published in 2013 in the journal Games and Culture, tracked 122 Los Angeles 5th graders who played Motion Math’s fraction game for five days for 20 minutes each day.

Improving a child’s sense of numbers, and their understanding of probability, fractions, ratios, shapes and patterns, can all be incorporated into daily life or with simple games.
