Potent storms were hitting the northern U.S. on Monday, with a potential to turn into a derecho with hurricane-force winds.

But the weather service said that if discrete supercell storms develop in the afternoon, damaging winds, hail and tornadoes are possible.

The wind and hail threat may continue through 11 p.m. Discrete supercells form independent of other storms in the area, which can be clustered or in squall lines.

Another supercell dropped hail up to 3” in diameter in west-central Oklahoma. Large hail was the favored mode of the day’s severe weather, with more than 200 reports nationwide.

A more complete damage survey has revealed EF-3 tornado damage. A discrete supercell formed south of Rochester and intensified as it moved into northwestern Miami County, north of Macy.

The National Weather Service is assessing the impact of a tornado that struck Dodgeville in southern Wisconsin.
