Two fatal crashes along state Highway 87 in San Jose over the weekend are under investigation, the California Highway Patrol said Monday.

Freeway north of Payson closed The southbound lanes of State Route 87 were closed just north of Payson due to a crash on the afternoon of July 6, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Rescue officials say crashes on this stretch of Highway 87 happen far too often — largely due to high speeds and heavy traffic, including log trucks and 18-wheelers.
