Twenty years ago, on September 11th, 2001, Michael W. Smith veered a bit from the contemporary Christian music he’d previously, to release an album full of praise and worship music.

Written by Andrew Peterson and Ben Shive, the worship song has become a staple in Christian churches around the world thanks to its musical sweep and conversational, call-and-response format.

In vertical worship, the worship team gathers in a circle with other worshippers surrounding them, while a band plays and praise songs are sung.
