Antonio Canova's 19th-century sculpture, depicting Mary Magdalene in "a state of ecstasy," is worth up to $10.5 million, Christie's said.
Antonio Canova, Maddalena Giacente (Recumbent Magdalene), 1819–22, as it appeared in the auction catalogue for its 2002 sale at Sotheby’s Sussex, where it fetched just £5,200 ($7,540).
The pair, thought to be a British couple, bought the sculpture for £5,170 two decades ago but have now discovered the piece was made by renowned Italian artist, Antonio Canova.
