Written and directed by Céline Sciamma, "Portrait of a Lady on Fire" brings a fresh perspective to the historical romantic drama, with celebrated performances by Adele Haenel and Noémie Merlant.

Set in 18th-century Brittany, the film stars Adèle Haenel – who worked with Sciamma on Water Lilies, and with whom the director was in a relationship for a number of years – as Héloïse.

“Portrait of a Lady on Fire” changes that up while offering one meta-textual twist: not only are director Sciamma and lead actress Haenel queer artists, they’re also a former couple.
