A federal judge paused cuts that the Trump administration had made to funding for public health research, but Monday’s temporary restraining order will apply only in the 22 Democratic-led states that brought a lawsuit challenging the reduction in funding.

A judge halted NIH funding cuts that California and Democratic-run states say could harm life-saving medical research work at UC, Cal State and other universities. The suit said the cuts violated federal law.

A coalition of attorneys general sued the federal government Monday, claiming that the $4 billion in cuts would “grind to a halt” studies on cancer, heart disease and other conditions.
