According to a recent post on Google’s community support page (via Tech-Issues Today ), Google Maps users will no longer be able to follow contributors. This planned change will happen automatically in September 2025 and will include the deletion of all data related to your followers, as well as those who follow you.

Google Maps is the go-to app for all your navigation needs, as has been the case for several years now. Like with any modern-day app, changes are inevitable, but not all changes are good. We were reminded of this in April following the removal of Assistant Driving Mode from the navigation experience.

Unfortunately, Android users recently noticed a big change in their Google Maps application. Suddenly, the option to control your music while using the maps has now disappeared, according to Chethan Rao of Android Police . Alternatively, the feature is still functional and running for the iOS version of Google Maps, but not for Android users.
