We are staying in Lake Louise in August and wondered if it is worth visiting on our way back to the airport for a late afternoon flight (so need to be at the airport around 3pm), or would that be too much of as rush?

In order to get the full experience of Heritage park it would be best if you spent an entire day there.
My understand yes, they are open in December and in fact it is supposed to be really pretty all decorated for the holidays. I urge you to check the website for days/times.
